AIR CONDITIONERS

AIR CONDITIONERS: A common mistake is to assume that the spiders body temperature is the same as the thermostat on the wall. Air conditioners cause serious cooling and the cold air will transfer into the moist substrate of your tarantularium. Generally the temperature of water is about 10-15 degrees cooler than the surrounding air, which means that if you have the thermostat set at 75 degrees, then the spiders cage will be about 60-65 degrees. This is too cold for most tarantulas to feed, molt and live in a healthy manner. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the soil to determine the actual body temperature of the spider. Air Conditioners can also dry out the air in the room making it impossible for condensation to form on the inside of the tank. If you have your spider in a cool, air conditioned room, then you might want to set up a “micro-climate” or use a heated cabinet . Your tarantulas will thrive in warmer temperatures.
